- Avoid handling your handbags after you have applied hand lotion. I am totally guilty of that with my favorite Molton Brown Gingerly lotion.
- Know your leather: Leather, Suede, Leatherette or Textile bags all have different needs. You can find cleaning kits like this one on Amazon, but what I like to use on my leather bags for a quick wipe is my beauty eye and lip towelettes. They seem to work just fine to occasionally wipe down the exterior of my my bag. My logic is, if the goodies in that wipe are good enough for the skin around my eyes, they will be gentle enough for my handbags. Comment bellow on your thoughts on that!
- Once in a while empty them out and dust them out.
- Removing Odors: Store your bag with a baking soda pack inside. Zip the handbag closed. Baking soda can remove bad odors from your fridge and your shoes too! Viva La Baking Sodá!
- Stains: I wouldn’t recommend trying to remove stains yourself, send your bag to a professional. The only thing I use on fabric surfaces to help extract oil spills before sending them to a professional, is salt. Salt absorbs oils, sprinkle salt over the stain, rub it gently in for just a second and let it sit there for a couple of hours. Shoe repair businesses often take care of bags, luggages and furniture. Give them a call!
- Use Pouches: Use make up pouches for the small items you put in your bag like this one from Gucci. This will help you organize your items better and help keep your bag interior clean!
- Proper Storage: Bags should be stored upright, in their dust bags (never in plastic or a non-breathable bag, as moisture will build up). If you no longer have the original dust bags, store them in a high end quality cotton pillowcases like this one from Matouk. Ensure that the bag is stuffed to maintain its shape. Use soft, dry materials like acid-free tissue paper, scarves or other fabric.
- Don’t pile bags on top of one another. Ensure that the bag is stuffed to maintain its shape; use soft, dry materials like acid-free tissue paper, scarves or other fabric. Unclip and roll up any long straps and store these inside the bag. Store handless upright. Always store them out of direct sunlight.
